ハンガリー・セグレッド生まれ。 カメラマン出身のプロデューサー。 30年代から40年代にかけて監督した作品も数多いが、そのほとんどは日本では紹介されていない。 1940年に自作の人形「パペトーン」を持ってイギリスからアメリカに渡った。 パラマウント社で人形映画の製作を始め、その技術力に対し1943年と46年にアカデミー特別賞を受けた。 戦後はじめて人間を月面へ送り（『月世界征服』）、地球を破壊し（『地球最后の日』）、宇宙人に侵略（『宇宙戦争』）させた男。 また、映画上で描いた最も未来（『タイム・マシン』）である80万年後という記録は未だ破られていない。 この4作品と『親指トム』はアカデミー特撮効果賞を受賞している。 |
