クリフォード・スタイン Clifford Stine

1906年3月24日 アメリカ・カリフォルニア生まれ、1986年12月12日没。 1955年から59年のたった5年間に実に58本もの作品の特殊撮影を担当した。 ＲＫＯのアシスタント・カメラマンとして『キング・コング』や『コングの復讐』などに参加したのち特殊撮影の道を歩み『The Miracle of the Bells』(1948)や『The Clay Pigeon』(1949)などの効果を担当する。 その後、 ＲＫＯの崩壊と前後して、当時ジョン・Ｐ・フルトンの抜けた特殊効果部の穴を埋めるべく人材探しをしていたユニヴァーサルの誘いを受け同社に移り、そこでまず『それは外宇宙からやって来た(外宇宙からきた物体)』（1953）の特殊効果を手掛け、続いて50年代ＳＦ映画の傑作のひとつ『宇宙水爆戦』（1955）に参加しスタイン一世一代のＳＦマインドに満ちた驚異の映像を創りだした。 その後、『モノリス・モンスター』『縮みゆく人間』（ともに57年）などの特殊効果を担当したがＳＦ映画ブームの衰えに呼応した同社の特殊効果部縮小にともない1960年代には特殊効果から身を引きカメラマンにもどる（撮影監督を担当した映画は30作品を超える）。 その当時の仕事ではＳ・キューブリックの『スパルタカス』における付加撮影が特筆に値する。 1968年の『Rosie! 』(1968)を最後に一時引退するが、1974年ＲＫＯ 時代の旧友マーク・ロブスンに口説かれ『大地震』およびロバート・ワイズ監督の『ヒンデンブルグ』の特殊効果をマット・アートの天才アルバート・ホイットロックらと担当し、 ホイットロック2年連続のアカデミー賞受賞の強力な補佐をしたのち鬼籍に入る。 残念ながらスタイン本人はオスカーを手にすることはできなかった。 （資料協力：skydog氏） |
