Ｈ・Ｇ・ウェルズ H.G. Wells

1866年9月21日イギリス・ケント州ブロムリー生まれ。 1946年8月13日ロンドンにて死去。 本名はHerbert George Wells。 父の経営するクリケット店の手伝いをしていた7才の時に両足を骨折、治療中に本を読みあさったことが小説に興味を持つきっかけとなる。 暮らしは貧しく14才から働きに出されるが、奨学金を受けロンドンのサイエンス師範学校へ進学、生物学者トーマス・Ｈ・ハクスリーとの出会いで広く科学の知識を得る。 1893年に作家活動を開始、1895年「タイムマシン」を発表する。 1898年「宇宙戦争」は、1938年10月30日アメリカのＣＢＳラジオがハロウィン特別番組として、通常放送の合間に「火星人が襲来した」という臨時ニュースの形式で放送、途中からラジオを聞いた人たちが本物のニュースを勘違いしてパニックを起こすという事態が発生した。 1914年「解放された世界」では、1950年代を舞台に全世界規模の戦争を描き、当時まだ開発されていなかった核兵器とその戦争使用を予言してしまった。 ウェルズは核兵器反対運動活動を行うが、核分裂が発見されるのは24年後の1938年、そして広島に核爆弾が投下された1945年の翌年、ウェルズは死去する。 ジュール・ヴェルヌと並び「ＳＦ小説の父」と称される。 2002年に公開された『タイムマシン』を監督したサイモン・ウェルズは、曾孫にあたる。 |
